OIL FUTURES: Crude Futures Succumb To Profit-Taking In Asia
SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Crude-oil futures edged lower in Asia Friday, as traders booked profits after Thursday's rally, which saw the benchmark U.S. oil contract settling at a three-month high.
On the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude futures for delivery in December traded at $93.44 a barrel at 0612 GMT, down $0.52 in the Globex electronic session after the contract jumped 4.2% overnight. December Brent crude on London's ICE Futures exchange fell $0.31 to $111.77 a barrel after ending 2.9% higher overnight.
Overall risk sentiment remained upbeat after European leaders Thursday made a breakthrough of sorts in the euro-zone financial crisis, with Asian stock markets rallying for a second day. However, some oil traders were quick to consolidate gains as prices moved higher.
Crude's upside momentum was "countered by overbought conditions and weakness in cash trades in Asia for commodities like steel and copper," MF Global said in a research note.
Market participants warned that global macroeconomic conditions remain fragile, while Europe still has many hurdles to clear.
"We do not think the European agreement ends the debt crisis, and there will be the need for another emergency summit in the not-too-distant future," said Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman. "Exaggerated growth forecasts and inflated privatization revenue projections will require additional adjustments going forward," he added.
Still, several energy and commodities consulting firms said crude will likely maintain its uptrend, at least in the near term, as equities and weather work in favor of oil demand.
"It is all about risk appetite again and we look for a renewed close correlation between the stock market and industrial commodities such as oil and copper going forward into the new month of November," Ritterbusch and Associates said in a note.
Cameron Hanover said, "Winter seems to be making its unofficial first appearance early this year. This should bring in buying for heating oil."
Nymex reformulated gasoline blendstock for November--the benchmark gasoline contract--fell 105 points to $2.7315 a gallon, while November heating oil traded at $3.0955, 29 points lower.
ICE gasoil for November changed hands at $972.00 a metric ton, up $2.25 from Thursday's settlement. Read more

If Kiran Bedi has committed crime, hang her, but bring Lokpal: Kejriwal
GHAZIABAD: Facing allegations of financial misconduct, activist Arvind Kejriwal broke his silence on Tuesday daring the government to conduct a probe against him and other Team Anna members even as he questioned the motive behind the "smear campaign".
Defending himself and Kiran Bedi, who is under attack for inflating her travel bills, Kejriwal said, "If someone paid the ticket examiner in Railway because he needed a ticket, so that person cannot question Suresh Kalmadi? Is this the message being given out?
"Do you mean to say that out of 120 crore people, only saints can question UPA's corruption and government will keep on robbing people? If anybody questions then that person will be asked to look into his case first," he said and warned that if the current smear campaign continues, the next movement will be 10 times bigger.
Kejriwal, who was accused by Swami Agnivesh of depositing donations for Hazare agitation in a trust run by him, said if they have committed mistakes, then the government was free to probe and punish them by taking the strongest possible action.
"Dont forgive us. Give us twice the punishment given to common people. But bring Lokpal and you will have to," he said.
He lamented that the whole attention is being shifted from corruption movement and Lokpal to core committe which has "no importance".
"Whether Kiran Bedi paid bills or not has become national issue. It will not benefit nation. It will be useful when Lokpal will come. Government should understand that their ways and methods are increasing the anger among people," he said.
"If these smear campaign continues, then the people of this country are watching and the next movement will be 10 times bigger," he said.
"If Kiran bedi has committed a crime, hang her. Send her to jail but talk about Lokpal Bill. Whatever mistake she has done, investigate and punish her but we cannot decide it in a press conference whether the allegations are true or false," he said.
On Digvijay Singh's allegations that he was supported by RSS and BJP, Kejriwal said he had always maintained that it is "useless to comment" on the utterings of the Congress leader.
On Lokpal Bill, he said there was no other way than passing Lokpal Bill and they were ready for dialogue.
"When had we run away from dialogue. But on the other hand allegations were levelled against us everyday. They spoilt the atmosphere. Who is creating disturbance. If the government's intentions are honest, then the Bill can be passed in a day," he said.
Asked about the "Gang of Four" referred to by Hazare, Kejriwal said it was a guess and only Hazare knows about it. "I don't know," he said.
Kejriwal claimed that the income tax department officials were after them and their chartered accountant was summoned by the officials on Monday. Read more

Saudi King Names Interior Minister Crown Prince
RIYADH—Saudi King Abdullah late Thursday named his conservative half brother and interior minister, Prince Nayef, as the crown prince following the recent death of the heir-apparent to the kingdom's throne.
Prince Nayef is one of the most powerful princes in the world's top oil-producing nation. He became the crown prince after a special committee, set up by the royal family five years ago to regulate the kingdom's opaque process of succession, reached an agreement on his elevation.
The so-called Allegiance Council, representing every branch of the dynasty founded by King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud last century, has never been tested before.
The move comes after crown prince and defense minister Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who was believed to be 86 years old, died in New York while undergoing treatment for an illness that analysts believed was cancer. His death raised questions over succession in the oil-rich kingdom as unrest continues to sweep the region and challenge nations' rulers.
Prince Nayef, believed to be 77, had been appointed as second deputy prime minister in 2009, an informal indication that he was next in line to the throne after the king and the crown prince.
Prince Nayef's appointment, which was expected, worries the more liberal Saudis who say his record as interior minister since 1975 involved blocking some reforms and overseeing crackdowns on political dissidents.
Other analysts, however, say the nature of his job as interior minister demanded an authoritarian approach. They believe he might show a different face if he ever becomes king.

Mad dogs and Englishman steal limelight in India
NEW DELHI: McLaren's Lewis Hamilton set the practice pace in a hazy first session at India's new Buddh International Formula One circuit on Friday on a morning of stray dogs, quick Red Bulls and fierce national pride.
On a historic day for motorsport in the world's second most populous nation, the $450 million facility fired up the country's long-awaited first Grand Prix weekend with the colours of the national flag leading the way.
The first car out of the pit lane was the saffron, white and green Force India, driven by Germany's Adrian Sutil.
It was followed closely by Team Lotus's Indian reserve Karun Chandhok, the second Force India of Paul di Resta and then Indian racer Narain Karthikeyan in the HRT.
Chandhok, who will not race on Sunday, had the honour of setting the first timed lap.
"It's an emotional moment for all of us," Force India team principal Vijay Mallya told reporters.
"There was a lot of speculation about whether the track would be ready and the event has had its fair share of controversy after what happened with the Commonwealth Games, but we're ready. It's a great track and the drivers love it."
A large black stray dog appeared on the main pit straight, one of the longest in the sport, shortly before the session was due to start.
Another appeared minutes into the session, causing it to be red-flagged for safety reasons for five minutes while the offending canine was rounded up.
Hamilton set his fastest lap of one minute 26.836 seconds right at the end of the session to deny the Red Bull pairing of double champion Sebastian Vettel and Australian Mark Webber an immediate one-two on the timesheets.
Vettel was 0.580 slower, with Webber 0.592 off the pace. McLaren's Jenson Button was fourth fastest.
Both titles have already been decided, with Vettel and Red Bull retaining their crowns, and Sunday's race will be a simple battle for victory between the usual suspects as well as a fight among mid-table teams for vital points.
Hamilton, sporting a helmet with the image of the late reggae singer Bob Marley on top, looked clearly determined to deny Vettel an 11th win of the season although there was some confusion afterwards about whether he had set his best lap when yellow warning flags were being waved.
Ferrari's Fernando Alonso had to sit out the last half hour after his car's engine failed.
The Spaniard parked up, hopped out and sat under a big screen where he could watch replays of his stricken car coming to a halt.
Williams' Pastor Maldonado also had engine problems, pulling over with a cloud of smoke erupting from the back of the car before a marshal extinguished any flames.
Many of the drivers' cars and helmets carried the logos and numbers of British racer Dan Wheldon and Italian MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli, who both died in accidents since the previous Korean Grand Prix. Read more

Crude bomb found in Advani's yatra route near Madurai
A crude 6 feet long pipe bomb was found under a bridge at Alampatti village on the outskirts of Madurai city hours before Advani's janchetana yatra was to pass through.
Local people discovered the pipe bomb, filled with some sort of explosive material with long wires jutting out and informed the police. The bomb was removed and police carried out extensive searches along the route.Advani's yatra continued on its original route, save for minor detour, on its way to Kerala.
It is a little too early to say who was responsible for placing the bomb, a senior police official said, adding that intensive investigations were on.
Incidentally, for Lal Krishna Advani, a bomb scare in Tamil Nadu is not new. Way back in 1998, a bomb was detected before his arrival at a meeting venue in the textitle town of Coimbatore. Incidentally Coimbatore had suffered serial bomb blasts in the same year.
Before leaving on the second leg of his yatra, Advani said the mood of the nation was against corruption and the corrupt. The last two years has been depressing with several scams and many union ministers and secretaries removed and lodged in jails.
"We do not know who else will join them," Advani said referring to the string of VIP inmates in Tihar central jail of Delhi.
In the fight against corruption, the stand of central government is most disappointing Advani said, adding "in the cash for votes scam, the whistle blowers are in jail and those who benefitted out of it are free in the government."
When asked if the Yeddyurappa incident had not robbed sheen off the BJP, Advani said that BJP did not have any soft corner for the corrupt. He had to go the moment Lokayukta report came.
Advani chose not to join issue with Digvijay Singh of the Congress and said that he was surprised that a leader of his stature was making comments like that (attacking Baba Ramdev, Anna Hazare and now Sri Sri).
Advani reiterated his stance that India should revisit its position on nuclear plants located on the coastal areas and extended his support for the protesters against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant saying that "topmost priority must be given to the security and safety of the people living in the vicinity of the plant."
The entire world has done and why does not India take a second view on the location of the Nuclear plants, the veteran BJP leader questioned.
On the plea for clemency by the convicted Rajiv Gandhi killers, Advani said that clemency should not be under political grounds, whether it was Rajiv Gandhi killers or attackers on the Indian parliament.
Asked if he would see the expansion of NDA's allies (with particular reference to AIADMK), Advani said that that anyone wanting to rule India must realise that coalition rule at the centre was here to stay. Read more
