Virat Kohli surprised to know about Yuvraj's tumour

While wishing him a speedy recovery, India's middle-order batsman Virat Kohli on Sunday said that he was not aware of Yuvraj Singh's illness and was surprised by reports about the left-hander recuperating from a "non-malignant tumour" in his lung.

Yuvraj's mother, Shabnam Singh, made the revelation in a formal statement on Saturday.

"We didn't have an intimation about this thing that came up. I was pretty surprised to know that this was the problem. I personally didn't know this was the problem.

"I was very surprised and I wish him a speedy recovery. All of us wish well for him and he is such a dear member to the team," Kohli said.

Yuvraj had declared himself unavailable for the one-day series against the West Indies because of the illness and was also not picked for the Test series in Australia.

A golf-ball size lump has been found over Yuvraj's left lung, according to his mother.

Kohli, who was picked at Yuvraj's expense for the third Test against the West Indies, silenced his critics with fifties in both innings.

The Delhi player thanked Sachin Tendulkar who advised him to stick to his natural game.

"I spoke to Sachin Tendulkar for about half an hour in the practice session before the game (Mumbai Test). I explained to him what (my) mindset was in the West Indies, how I put myself under too much pressure, how I became too cautious.

"He helped me out immensely. He asked me not to change myself just because I am playing Test cricket," Kohli told 'NDTV'.

Kohli was naturally satisfied with his performance in the third Test, especially after a none-too-impressive outing in the West Indies.

"It's pretty satisfying. To be honest, I didn't have a great outing in the West Indies, and it was more of a disappointment for me as well as people who had expected a lot.

"I mean this was one format where I really wanted to make a dent. This is just the beginning. It really feels nice to have contributed in the one game I got in the series, and (am) looking forward to Australia," he said.

Asked if he would target any particular bowler in Australia, Kohli responded in negative.

"We have seen all of them, played all of them. There is no particular bowler who can be targetted because they all are quality bowlers Read more

Drink beer for a healthy heart

Beer drinkers have something to cheer about if a recent report is to be believed: The consumption of beer in moderate quantities (that means one to two glasses only!) could reduce the risk of heart disease.

The findings are based on a meta-analysis of several different studies conducted worldwide from over 200,000 people's drinking habits, conducted by Italy's Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura. It showed that moderate consumption of beer decreases drinkers' risk of heart disease by 31 per cent, just as much as moderate consumption of wine.

Published online by the European Journal of Epidemiology, the study gives beer drinkers a chance to level the scores with oenophiles who have occasionally slammed the drinking habits of beer lovers.

Why beer is good for you Cardiologist Dr Hasmukh Ravat says, "Beers are virtually fat and fibre free, and contain some protein. Most provide some carbohydrate, potassium, magnesium and B vitamins - including folic acid - which can lower homocysteine in the blood. High homocysteine levels are a possible risk factor for heart disease."

Beer also contains natural antioxidants. Phenolics (similar to antioxidants found in red wine) and compounds known as melanoidins, formed when barley or malt is heated, give very characteristic colours and flavours to beers. A series of scientific studies suggests that the polyphenolic compounds in red wine or beer, such as flavonoids and resveratrol, may play an active role in limiting the start and progression of the hardening of arteries.

One of the most important alterations caused by regular alcohol consumption is an increase in levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, or "good cholesterol." One to two drinks per day of any alcohol type have been shown to increase HDL cholesterol by about 12 per cent. Contd. from pg 1

Exercise caution Obviously, there is a catch. Too much alcohol consumption has repeatedly shown to contribute to cardiovascular disorders such as alcoholic cardiomyopathy (which develops when the heart muscle becomes too weak to pump blood effectively), high blood pressure, and certain electrical disturbances of the heartbeat. Excessive alcohol use can also lead to liver cirrhosis, cancers, pancreatitis, neurological disorders, motor vehicle accidents, and addiction. Naturally, increasing alcohol consumption Read more

Refund 3G license fees if roaming pact illegal: Bharti Airtel, Vodafone & Idea Cellular

NEW DELHI: Leading telecom service providers Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular on Tuesday sought the prime minister's intervention in the 3G Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) issue and said the government should refund the 3G license fees if such pacts were not allowed.

Airtel, along with Vodafone and Idea Cellular, had entered into a roaming agreement to offer 3G services in the circles where they could not win the 3G spectrum.

However, the telecom regulator and the enforcement cell of the telecom department department say the agreement as illegal.

"In the event, the 3G ICR is now deemed impermissible, then it would be clear breach of our contract and the pre-auction confirmation given by the government," the operators said in a joint letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"In that eventuality, we request that our spectrum auction payments be refunded to us with interest along with compensation for all the capital investments made by us," the companies said.

The letter, which was signed by Bharti Airtel chairman and group chief executive officer, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla and Vodafone Group group chief executive Vittorio Colao, also said that the telecom companies were only providing 3G services to roaming customers, which did not amount to spectrum sharing as was being alleged.

"Any suggestion that the existing 3G ICR arrangement is akin to spectrum sharing is, to say the least, misleading."

"Even DoT, in its recent communication to TRAI has clearly stated that Intra Service Area Roaming in 3G network where one of the operators does not have 3G spectrum shall not be treated as spectrum sharing."

A copy of the letter has also been sent to Communications Minister Kapil Sibal.

The operators said that they are astonished to hear that the government was considering a reversal of its earlier stated position and seeking to question the legality and permissibility of 3G ICR arrangement.

"This is tantamount to reneging on the government's promises made through the technology-neutral license and the 2008 license amendment and the Q&A confirmations provided before the 3G auctions," the companies said in the letter.

"We seek your most urgent intervention to ensure that contract and promises are honoured otherwise the reputation of an acclaimed, transparent auction, will be harmed irreparably."

The high priced bidding for 3G auctions, which took place last year fetched the exchequer a little under Rs.70,000 crore and saw top operators coughing billions of rupees with Bharti Airtel paying up Rs 12,295 crore for 13 circles.

Obama pushes payroll tax cut extension in New Hampshire

US President Barack Obama is in the political battleground state of New Hampshire to challenge Congress to extend an expiring payroll tax cut.

His trip comes a day after the failure of a deficit-cutting effort by a bipartisan congressional committee.

Democrats had hoped to include the tax cut extension and other economy-boosting measures into an agreement by the so-called super-committee.

Republicans are not wholly against the proposal, but may attach conditions.

Speaking from a high school in Manchester, New Hampshire, the president will argue that failure to extend the tax breaks would hurt middle-class families.

Under his latest jobs plan the president would cut by a further percentage point a payroll tax break that has reduced workers' contributions to Social Security by 2%.

The measure helped 121 million families save $934 (£600) last year, the Tax Policy Center says.

"If we don't act, taxes will go up for every single American, starting next year. And I'm not about to let that happen," President Obama said on Monday.

It has been nearly two years since he visited New Hampshire, a presidential swing state he won in 2008.

In January, it holds one of the first state-by-state nominating contests to pick the Republican candidate who will challenge Mr Obama for the White House in a year's time.

During Tuesday's visit, President Obama will also argue for an extension of benefits for the long-term unemployed.

Introduced as part of the 2008 stimulus package, it was renewed last year but is also due to expire at the end of this year unless Congress acts.

Analysts say that failing to preserve the measures would be a drag on the fragile US economy, already labouring under an unemployment rate of 9%.

Official figures released on Tuesday found the US economy had grown in the last quarter at a slower pace than previously estimated.

Republican members of Congress have not ruled out an extension to the payroll tax.

Party members sent the White House a letter in September stating the proposal was a potential area of common ground in the president's $447bn jobs bill.

But Republicans may demand the $248bn cost of the measure be offset elsewhere.

There is doubt over whether Congress will be able to make a deal, given the super-committee's failure after weeks of talks to agree how to cut government spending.

It means automatic across-the-board spending cuts are due to come into effect in 2013.

However, some Republican lawmakers have already said they will work to avoid the cuts to the Pentagon's budget.

Currency check: Where is rupee headed Vs dollar?

The rupee on Tuesday touched an all-time low of 52.73 to the dollar, and speculation is rife that it could slide further for two reasons. Given the strong demand for the dollar globally (because of the turmoil in the eurozone), the greenback is expected to climb further vis-à-vis most other currencies. Specifically to India, foreign institutional investors are in no hurry to invest in our equity market due to a combination of domestic and global concerns.
Thankfully, FIIs have not sold shares aggressively despite the weakness in both the rupee as well as equities. But should the rupee slide further for whatever reason, it could trigger a vicious circle wherein FIIs would start pulling out money from shares, which in turn would weaken the rupee, and in turn spark more selling from other foreign investors.

What is the possibility of more ugly surprises in store?
Experts are hesitant to call the next low for the rupee. However, a majority of them think the rupee would continue to drift lower for at least the next couple of months.
“There is no near term trigger to bring back foreign fund flow into India,” Pramit Brahmbhatt, CEO, Alpari India, told moneycontrol.com.
“With the holiday season around the corner, there is unlikely to be any big-bang purchase (of shares) by FIIs. Moreover, domestic factors like high inflation and rising crude price would put further pressure on the rupee,” he said.
Globally, investors are now looking to the safety of dollar-backed assets, because of the crisis in Europe. This, coupled with the domestic factors, has made a strong case for overseas investors to exit from the emerging economies like India.
“Capital inflow is a major bottleneck here,” said Roy Paul, deputy general manager – foreign exchange, Federal Bank.
“The near term pressure is going to continue for some time. RBI intervention to stem rupee’s fall is limited as the regulator has only a reserve of around USD 320 billion to meet country’s import requirements for 6-8 months. The pressure may aggravate further due to higher domestic demand for dollars emanating out of FCCB repayments, due in 2012.”
Indian companies had earlier raised foreign funds through foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs). Between now and December 2012, according to a report by Kotak Institutional Equities, FCCBs worth about $5.6 billion is due for redemption. This will add to dollar demand by domestic companies as the repayment has to be made in dollar terms.
The rupee has a good support at 52.80 to the dollar. If it breaks at that level, it would touch 53 per dollar. A strong RBI intervention, according to analysts, is required to stem rupee’s bleeding beyond the 53 mark.
However, the regulator which is gradually moving towards full rupee convertibility would do only indirect intervention. The mechanism is to instruct public sector banks to sell dollars.
“RBI’s efforts to cut the excessive one-way move have been futile. There is not a single factor to bring the rupee bull into street which was in total control till July 2011,” Moses Harding, head – ALCO and economic market research, IndusInd Bank said in a note.

Tribunal asks Vodafone to pay Rs 25 crore penalty

New Delhi: The telecom tribunal TDSAT has directed telecom service provider Vodafone to pay Rs 25 crore penalty, 50 per cent of what the Department of Telecom (DoT) had earlier levied upon it for issuing bulk SIM cards without proper verification.

"The petitioner (Vodafone) may, therefore, deposit a sum of Rs 25 crore, being 50 per cent of the amount, within two weeks from date subject to compliance of the aforementioned directions," said the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) in an order dated November 17.

The TDSAT bench headed by chairman Justice SB Sinha also said that it is difficult to accept the contention that when bulk connections of more than 10,000 connections had been given in favour of Matrix, the SIM cards could be rented out without the knowledge of the petitioner.

"The question as to whether the stipulations contained in the impugned order are correct or not, may have to be determined at the time of final hearing," the order added.
Vodafone had entered into an agreement with telecom solutions service provider Matrix Cellular in 2003 when it was Hutch and had issued 10,000 SIM cards for its own use which were later in an enquiry by Telecom Enforcement, Resource and Monitoring (TERM) cell of the DoT discovered to have been rented out by the operator.

The DoT, therefore, had on October 18, 2011 passed an order imposing penalty of Rs 50 crore on the telecom operator.
TDSAT said that it is of the opinion that Vodafone has violated the conditions of licence thus declining to deviate from the order passed by the tribunal in the case of Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular. Read more

Salman Rushdie wages war against Facebook through Twitter

Washington, Nov 15: Looks like the famous British author is controversy's favourite child. After his popular book, the Satanic Verses raised a furore, his latest tiff with popular social networking site has now grabbed media headlines. The tussle occurred when Rushdie insisted on using his middle name, Salman in his profile page instead of his first name Ahmed.

The matter was brought to light through a series of tweets by Rushdie on Monday through his Twitter account @salmanrushdie. He has close to 113,000 followers on Twitter.

The tiff occurred when Facebook insisted on the blanket rule for all its 800 million members that they use their real names on the site instead of any pseudonyms. With Salman Rushdie popularly known as Salman in the world, Facebook would hear nothing of it and stood by their rule.

Rushdie went to the extent of sending a photograph of his passport to Facebook after it was deactivated over the weekend after they refused to believe it was the real Salman Rusdhie. Salman said, "They said yes, I was me, but insisted I use the name Ahmed which appears before Salman on my passport and which I have never used. They have reactivated my FB page as 'Ahmed Rushdie,' in spite of the world knowing me as Salman. Morons."

In spite of sending repeated requests to activate his original page with his profile name, he sent a message to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg on Twitter that said, "Where are you hiding, Mark? Come out here and give me back my name!"

Even after the message elicited no response from Facebook's end, Salman Rushdie launched a scathing attack through Twitter aimed at Facbook and called it 'ridicule by the Twitterverse'. Some of the tweets read -

"Dear #Facebook, forcing me to change my FB name from Salman to Ahmed Rushdie is like forcing J. Edgar to become John Hoover. Or, if F. Scott Fitzgerald was on #Facebook, would they force him to be Francis Fitzgerald? What about F. Murray Abraham?"

After a couple of tweets, Facebook finally heard the noise with Rushdie reponding aptly, "Victory! #Facebook has buckled! I'm Salman Rushdie again. I feel SO much better. An identity crisis at my age is no fun. Thank you Twitter!"

He added, "Just received an apology from The #Facebook Team. Read more

15,000 teachers await eleven months' salary

BHUBANESWAR: Over 15,000 Siksha Sahayaks (SS), who were either regularized or have become eligible for regular posts of teachers, have not received their salaries for the past 11 months.

"I have been meeting my expenses by borrowing money, promising repayment after receiving my salary. But the salary is nowhere to be seen. It is difficult to manage," said a teacher.

The newly regularized teachers cannot hope for respite for at least a few more months. "No budgetary provision was made for their salary in the last budget because they were regularized after the budget. They would get their full salary after the government makes a supplementary budget provision," said Shukadeb Das, director of elementary education.

The teachers, however, will get paid for the month of November in December, the director said, as one month's salary could be managed from the last budgetary provision.

The Siksha Sahayak Sangha has expressed strong resentment over the delay. "It shows the non-serious attitude towards teachers though the government is supposed to prioritize school education after Right to Education Act was enforced. The teachers are not in a position to sustain their families," said Prashant Mahapatra, general secretary of the Sangha.

Mahapatra said the government should take urgent steps to correct the mistakes and release teachers' salaries as soon as possible.

According to government policy, an SS becomes a regular teacher after serving for six years. While the government has issued regularization orders of those appointed six years ago in 11 districts, it is yet to issue such orders in nine other districts.

An SS gets a fixed monthly remuneration of Rs 4,000 per month. They become junior teachers after three years of service to get Rs 4,500 per month. When regularized after six years, they become regular teachers, entitled to a payment of Rs 11,544 per month Read more

New Delhi: Country's second largest software exporter Infosys on Friday announced the launch of XBRL filing solution to help companies file their financial statements in the format mandated by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

"XBRL Filing solution is a ready to use tool, in which users can convert their excel-based financial information into XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) format in a few simple steps," Infosys said in a statement.

Govt unlikely to consider fuel price increase in Nov: Source

New Delhi: A ministers' panel to consider raising prices of subsidised fuels -- diesel, kerosene and cooking gas -- is unlikely to meet this month, an oil ministry source said on Thursday, as the winter session of parliament commences on Nov. 22.

"There is no meeting scheduled," the source told reporters.

The oil firms are likely to suffer a revenue loss of  Rs 1.3 trillion on their sales of subsidised fuels in the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2012.

In June last year, India allowed state-run fuel retailers to fix the prices of gasoline, but continue to control prices of other fuels. Sharing from
