Conspiracy theory around Osama and Obama

Sharmila Ravinder

I have always been in a quandary. Many times I have asked, do we live in a world of conspiracy or are the ways of this world more straightforward than what it seems. Are we getting more pessimistic with our agnostic attitude? We live in a world where news breaks to us on a twenty-four by seven basis and we feed off tit bits of information as manna for the mind. To accept or not accept a story at face value is akin to making a choice between the blissful blue pill of illusion and the agonizing red pill of harsh reality. How many times do we remain sceptical of information that comes to us and on how many occasions do we try to look for more meaning into the daily despatch.
The latest news that is hogging space in every form of media network across the world is of Osama’s death. Osama Bin Laden’s body was dumped at sea a decade later and a trillion dollars after. A DNA test prior to dumping the world’s most dreaded terrorist confirmed a 99% match by the US Government. The US Government was in a haste to get rid of Osama unlike in the case of Saddam Hussein where a full-blown trial was held for mass consumption. Neither was there any victory parade with Osama’s dead body as was the case with Saddam Hussein’s sons. Many have been asking the question, why could Osama not been captured alive? The US Government had indicated it was never their mission to capture Osama alive.
Sometime back in March 2010, Eric Holder Jr, Attorney General of the United States, appearing in front of a Congressional panel was asked the question how would the Government handle Osama Bin Laden if he were to be ever captured alive.  Would there be a federal court trial or a military commission? The Attorney General stated that Bin Laden “will never appear in an American courtroom,” according to The Washington Post’s Carrie Johnson. “Let’s deal with the reality here. The reality is we will be reading Miranda rights to a corpse.” Holder said he was being “flippant” but added that bin Laden “will be killed by us or by his own people.” In contrast, when a similar question was posed to Stanley McChrystal, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan seemed genuinely puzzled when asked if his troops had given up on capturing bin Laden alive. “Wow. No,” he said. And CIA Director Leon Panetta asserted that bin Laden would be taken to a military base and interrogated by U.S. agents.
The Attorney General’s prediction now overrides both the NATO commander’s as well as the CIA Director’s statement. Osama’s obituary announcement comes at a time when Obama is gearing up for a reelection for a second term. It also keeps the “ birth certificate “ controversy of Obama’s clearly in the back burners for the time being. The timing is perfect. George Bush’s Texan attitude towards terrorists was to “smoke them” out of their holes, but Obama will be labeled as the one for smoking out the world’s biggest terrorist not out of a hole but out of a gigantic million dollar hovel that served as a fortress in an upscale locality of Pakistan’s capital. read more

What is Google Chromebook?

Chromebooks offer a compelling list of benefits. They boot in 10 seconds, then last 8.5 hours on a charge. Because all apps and data live "in the cloud" (on some server somewhere), they don't vanish when your hardware dies or goes missing. The problem is that they're not best at anything.

Google's first Chromebooks started shipping this month and Cloud-based laptops from Samsung and Acer running Google's Chrome OS are also on track to ship. Problem is, everyone seems to think that Google's new Chromebook is a great laptop -- for someone else.
In this "Chromebook: The Computer for the Rest of Them" article on Datamation, author Mike Elgan looks at the Google Chromebook and explains why he believes that most Chromebooks will be purchased by IT professionals -- not for their own use, but for clueless users, as the latest attempt to prevent those users from screwing everything up and wasting the IT department's time.

Chromebook: The Computer for the Rest of Them

Everyone seems to think that Google's new Chromebook is a great laptop -- for someone else. Apple's slogan for the original Macintosh in 1984 was: "The computer for the rest of us." The slogan for the Chromebook should be: "The computer for the rest of them."
Chromebooks won't be used by most Google employees. They need "real" computers to build the world's most successful search engine and all the other products and services Google builds. Google's work is too important for Chromebooks

Chromebook Benefits

Chromebooks offer a compelling list of benefits. They boot in 10 seconds, then last 8.5 hours on a charge. Because all apps and data live "in the cloud" (on some server somewhere), they don't vanish when your hardware dies or goes missing.

Chromebooks come in cheap Wi-Fi only versions, and more pricey 3G varieties, which also support Wi-Fi. Prices range from $350 for the Wi-Fi-only Acer unit to $500 for the 3G Samsung device. Companies can rent them for $30 a month

Chromebook Flaws

But the Chromebook concept also has major flaws. The company intends to update the software without notifying anyone. That means IT departments can't test those updates before rolling them out.

The biggest flaw is that without an Internet connection, Chromebooks become seriously hobbled. While some apps, such as Google Docs and Gmail, work offline, most apps won't work without a connection.

Beware of Google+ security threats

With over three million Indian users on Google+, the site is fast becoming the new rage with the social networking crowd. However, Beware! Security solutions provider, Kaspersky Lab has warned Internet users of targeted attacks on the social networking site.
Even Experian data suggest that social media in India reaches out to 60 per cent of the online Indian audience and with Google+ still in its beta phase it is fast becoming a hunting ground for cybercriminals.

Fabio Assolini, malware researcher, Global Research and Analysis Team at Kaspersky Lab says: “Kaspersky Labs have identified Brazilian cybercriminals who have already started sending fake invites (to open Goggle+ accounts) with malicious links pointing to malware, specifically Trojan bankers."
The fake invites contain infected links that redirect the user to a very common Brazilian Trojan banker file hosted at Dropbox (file sharing site). The most interesting thing to note in this message, however, is another link pointing to a form hosted at Google Docs, a free online Office suite.
The message shows the link as “send the invitation to your friends” but it is actually a fake form created to collect names and e-mail addresses of new victims. Kaspersky Lab has reported this malicious file and the fake web form to Google.
Within weeks of the launch, Google+ has reached about 20 million users, according to ComScore data. While Google+, say company executives, is still being tested with a closed group of users, some of its built-in features like Circles (where user segregates friends and followers) have serious privacy flaws.
“One of the main features of Google+ is Circles, the possibility to easily share the right content with the right people. However, once the content has been shared to a Circle, anyone can share it by default to other Circles. It boils down to the fact that the tagging feature can be bypassed by using the reshare option," says George Lucian Petre of security software provider BitDefender.
“Let’s say user “A” shares a picture only with their “Close Friends” circle, and disables resharing. All it takes is for someone from that “Close friend” circle to tag a person from outside this circle in the picture. Once this has been done, that person can share the picture with anyone, in any way." read more

LinkedIn rolls out Web button for job applications

Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Google have all got 'em -- Web buttons. They're all the rage in social media. LinkedIn has a few too, and on Monday, the professional-minded social network rolled out a new one.
LinkedIn's new button is a little bit different. It doesn't share a link, display a sign of approval or create a blog post. It allows LinkedIn users to apply for a job, automatically, using their LinkedIn profile.
The button, a blue rectangle, reads "Apply with LinkedIn" and that phrase is the button's official name, said Jonathan Seitel, a technical product manager at the San Francisco company.
"We are going to make it easy for you to submit your profile for any job application on the Web with one simple click," Seitel said in a blog post. "Some of the first companies to debut 'Apply with LinkedIn' button on their company websites (besides our own) include Netflix, TripIt, Photobucketand over a thousand other companies. In addition, we're also working closely with the top Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to help them and their customers match the best candidates for the right jobs."
When users click an Apply with LinkedIn button, their resume appears in a pop-up window (provided they're logged into the service), and they can make changes there in the pop-up to suit that specific job.
"LinkedIn will also show you your professional connections that work at the company to increase your chances of getting hired through a referral," Seitel said. "If you don't know anybody at the company, we'll show you people who can introduce you to someone there. This is extremely powerful -- statistics show that referrals are the No. 1 source of external hires at companies."
After applying, the job will appear in the user's "Saved Jobs" tab under the "Jobs" category on LinkedIn, "so you have a record of all the jobs you've applied to around the Web, throughout your career," he said. read more

Facebook blocks access to hidden iPad app

Computerworld - Researchers over the weekend uncovered a Facebook app for Apple's iPad, and showed how "jailbroken" tablets could run the still-unreleased software.
But by Monday afternoon, Facebook had blocked log-ins through the iPad app, according to Marvin Bernal, a Toronto computer engineering student who earlier tweeted how to unlock the new software.
"It appears that Facebook has disabled logins through the 'iPad' version," said Bernal in a message on Twitter at approximately 1 p.m. Eastern time. "Time to wait for an official release."
According to Bernal and others, Facebook's iPad app is tucked inside Version 3.4.4 for the iPhone, which appeared on the App Store last Friday as a fix for several crash bugs and to restore the Send button to several sections of the social networking site.
Rather than post separate files on the App Store for the iPhone and iPad, many iOS developers create a "universal" binary that installs device-specific versions on both.
To access Facebook's hidden iPad app, users had to jailbreak the tablet -- a term for hacking a device to allow its owner to install software not approved by Apple -- then change the "UIDeviceFamily" setting in the iPhone app to "2."
Instructions on how to activate the iPad app, including a video walk-through, were quickly posted on the Internet by the Jailbreak Nation blog.
Facebook did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the hidden app, or the disabling of log-ins.
The appearance of a universal binary that includes an iPad-specific app may signal that Facebook will soon release the program.
Reports of an imminent Facebook iPad app debut have circulated for some time, but speculation gathered momentum last month when the New York Times, citing unnamed sources, claimed that the company would ship an app in the next few weeks read more

BioWare using Facebook to select the look of Mass Effect 3 main character

Bioware, maker of Mass Effect 3, is using Facebook to crowd-source the look of the female version of Commander Shepard.
How often do you get a chance to affect the making of a blockbuster video game? BioWare has decided to outsource the final decision on the looks of the female Commander Shepard. As fans of the game franchise already know, Commander Shepard is the main character in the game, and players have the chance to decide to play the game as a male or female. Players are able to customize the look of both genders, but if you are lazy, BioWare provides a default character model for your viewing pleasure.
The company posted pictures of the six finalists on its official Facebook page, and will pick the winner by number of “likes” each one gets. At the time of writing, female Shepard number five is winning with over 10,000 more likes then its nearest competitor. We think that number one looks a lot like Natalie Portman, which might come in handy with the Mass Effect movie coming out at some point. read more

Facebook launches social media support for firms

Social media giant Facebook is looking to appeal to more small businesses by offering to help get them setup on the network.
Facebook for Business has been designed to encourage more small business owners onto the social networking site who may have been put off in the past. The newly-launched advice pages offer help on setting up profiles on Facebook with relevant details of the business, creating adverts to target people by age and location, and advice on creating deals to entice new customers.
A Facebook spokesperson said: "Facebook allows small businesses to create rich social experiences, build lasting relationships and amplify the most powerful type of marketing – word of mouth.
"We created Facebook.com/business to make it even easier for people to reach these objectives and grow."
Writing on technology website Gigaom, Colleen Taylor said the move by Facebook suggests the company is taking the threat of Google+ seriously.
She said: "Perhaps most importantly, it serves as a nicely timed reminder that unlike Google+, Facebook encourages companies to use its service for company branding."
